book review July 5, 2010 Mr. M. B. Hill This is a companion book to the TV series of the same name. It has been well put together and provides further background info' to events shown in the series. I would recommend the book to those who have and interest in the events of WW2.

I haven't finished the book, but Hugh hasn't the same writing flair as his father. All a bit slow, and whilst soldiering is 98% boredom and 2% action, this book follows the same percentages.
I really wanted to like this book but.... June 10, 2010 Mario486 (Edinburgh, Scotland) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I was really looking forward to reading this book in the light of similar narratives like Band of Brothers et al. Unfortunately I am finding it quite difficult to get through. Huge Ambrose has obviously done a huge amount of research into the lives of the various Marines and pilots he describes in this book and therein I think also lies the problem. The book reads just like that, a collection of notes. This approach may work in a TV mini-series but it does not in print. It jumps around a lot between the different characters experiences, often taking me a page or more to figure out who he is writing about. The level of detail in the stories also vary, great detail on run of the mill things and then glossing over historically significant events.
good, but not great May 27, 2010 Joshua Wragg (derbyshire) Okay, it shouldn't be compared to anything else, it should stand on it's own and i should make judgement on what is being shown to me now and not what i have seen previously. HOWEVER, it is impossible to not think about band of brothers or saving private ryan, or any other war film for that matter.
The comparisons between band of brothers and this are sizable, down to the interviews, the 10 part series, the same makers (not directors however).. It's quality, don't get me wrong it's all a good watch, 8-10 are fantastic and deserve 5 star. The storys of each character made it different to band of brothers, maybe to the dis-advantage to the general war viewer who presumably like me, cares more about the action and the overall feel to the war rather than focus narrowly on 3 individuals and what war brought for them. It's a difficult area, maybe i'm wrong, maybe everybody loved it, but for me it's just not band of brothers which was fantastic, this is just really good. Which sounds bad but really isn't, i'll be watching them again.. maybe a third time for the last 3 episodes... something was missing though, to make it better would've been difficult and imo they failed.
8/10 (10/10 episodes 8-10).. Watch it now and tell me otherwise !
Why did he bother? May 27, 2010 Djfraser (UK) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As I enjoyed Band of Brothers [both the book and TV series], I had hoped that this book would be as good.
Sadly this has been a huge disappointment, as a matter of fact I could not wait to finish the book and gave it away soon after finishing.I was always expecting the book to excite me after a few chapters, sadly it was not to be.
It is just too tedious and boring, had I spent the full asking price for it I would have asked for a refund.
