5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!   July 27, 2010
HJWoods
I was bought this book as a late Christmas present earlier this year, and loved it at first read - visually it is a gorgeous book, and the pictures are enough to make you want to try out the recipes (well, they made me want to try them out!). I have had a read of some of the more negative reviews on here, but from my experience I can't see what the problem is (I may just be a 'lucky' cook)... So far I've tried the Brooklyn Blackout Cake and the traditional brownies, and both were GORGEOUS.

I was a bit nervous making the Brooklyn Blackout Cake, as the recipe for the chocolate sponge layers was different to anything I'd tried before and the 'custard' icing was also very different (I'm more of a buttercream icer, I have to admit) - but when it was all assembled it looked and tasted absolutely fantastic!

The brownies were much simpler, and since they didn't contain any nuts made a great option for everyone - they didn't last long (and, although it may be traitorous to say it, they were cheaper to make than Nigella's and suitable for everyone due to no nuts)...

I'm looking forward to testing out more of the recipes going forward - I've tried the carrot cake as made by a friend, which was also gorgeous, so really I can't rate this highly enough!

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful book, but slightly disappointing   July 27, 2010
SJ (London, UK)
I received this book for my birthday last year, and was instantly excited by the beautiful photography. However, once I began to bake from it I was dissappointed ass many of the recipes just did not seem to work. I am an experienced home baker and rarely have disasters, although this book has greatly added to my number of inedible creations.

I mainly seem to have problems with the muffins recipes, the sweet muffins always seem to be chewy and the savory muffins usual come out hard. But I have also had some wonderful successes from this book i.e. the carrot cake and key lime pie are scrummy and their frosting is just wonderful. If I am honest I wouldn't recommend this book to others unless they are looking for a dent in their culinary confidence.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing   July 26, 2010

I adore this book. So far only three recipes have been tried, but the strawberry cheesecake cupcake resulted in a marriage proposal from a friend!

Easy to follow, simple recipes that lead to simply stunning and amazing tasking cakes. Cant wait for the next batch!

Would highly recommend to everyone

5 out of 5 stars Yum!   July 26, 2010

I was given this book as a Christmas present, and was put off trying any of the recipes from some of the bad reviews. However after trying a real Hummingbird cupcake on a trip to London, I couldn't wait to have a go.

I've made 3 recipes so far:

Banana loaf - I used up some really over-ripe bananas and this loaf was absolutely gorgeous - it looked just like the picture in the book.

Vanilla cupcakes - light, fluffy and gorgeous

Red velvet cake - I doubled the recipe and baked it in 3 sandwich tins to make a layer cake. I followed the amended instructions on the Hummingbird Bakery website, and the cake turned out fantastically well, and tastes lovely too.

So far I'm very pleased with this book; as other reviewers have commented it's a lovely book to look at too - true food porn!
