This book will make you throw your pencils away! September 1, 2010 B. C. Royce 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is one of the best watercolour instruction books I have ever read, it has completely changed my way of painting with watercolour. I am no longer that tight, stressed out painter! And, it is SO much fun!
I can't recommend this book highly enough, the method of painting is logically explained via excellent step-by-step tutorials. The most important ingredient is WATER !
Buy this book today and enjoy!
Loose or too loose August 2, 2010 K. Platt (Sheffield, England) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Part of the How to Paint Series that is such good value. The image on the front cover of this book is very captivating. However some of the inner pages show paintings that look barely begun let alone finished. It's one thing to loosen up but another entirely to merely splash a bit of colour onto paper. Some of the work is truly beautiful - the dog, the elephant but others look like they have been executed in half an hour to fill the book. On the whole this book is inspirational because it is good to learn to paint loosely. The demonstrations are good and the production of the book is superb. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.
how to paint colour & light in watercolour by Jean Haines July 27, 2010 cherylm 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Jeans book is a true gem, full of beautiful paintings filled with rich bold colours and light and clear and precise instructions for each unusual and stunning project.
Her amazing talent and skill as an artist is evident in every turn of the page and it is a joy to own the book and to follow the demonstrations and experiment with her ideas and her loose way of working.
Every page is a joy to look at and her knowledge and passion and encouragement is clearly communicated to the reader to have a go at the techniques described and to pick up a paint brush and play.
A wonderful book July 25, 2010 Sue D 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have looked forward for weeks for the publication of this beautiful book, and am not disappointed. It is truly inspirational and sent me rushing for paper and paint. Jean's writing style can be compared to Delia Smith, in that you imagine she is talking personally to you! She passes on many useful tips and her enthusiasm for her subject is on every page. The paintings in the book are a wonderful reminder of workshops attended. I would recommend this book to everyone, watercolourist or not, just for the vibrant paintings within.
Thank-you Jean. July 21, 2010 SandyB 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My eagerly anticipated book arrived last week and I have looked through it every day, finding something new and relevant every time. Jean's beautiful loose flowing style of painting is so outside my personal comfort zone but I am determined to follow her advice and loosen up my paintings. Even if you don't paint in watercolours, buy this book and leave it on your coffee table, it will promote lively art discussions with your friends.
