It seems there is no perfect Mandarin phrasebook! June 13, 2010 Suz 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this plus the RoughGuide version. The RoughGuide had a better pronunciation guide (phonetic as well as pinyin) but didn't actually help - no-one understood me, but I ended up using it because of the dictionary. The lonely planet had a great character stroke dictionary which I bought it for, but i never used it. It is useful in that it has chinese written under the useful phrases, which roughguide doesnt. I do say I never used it, but i think id still recommend both - neither are perfect. I dont anyone has made the perfect Mandarin travel phrasebook yet!

I bought this book for my Son who is working in China.
He says it has come in very useful and is easy to use.It has been a great help helping him to learn the language
a must have if you're going to China October 18, 2009 N. Janik (Manchester) Very useful and ideal for my 2 weeks in China, easy to use and perfect size for travelling..
pinyin is great for travellers October 9, 2009 C. Monk (Fife, UK) If you have had a grounding in being taught how to pronounce all of the different syllables in pinyin, it is very useful in getting yourself understood in China. If not then this book does its best to describe them in english word examples. This book utilised the translation of English to pinyin and introduced some subtleties to the language in the tools section at the beginning. Listing everything in chinese script was also very handy if you were really stuck.
The dictionary at the back is good, while the phrases are cut into three sections: practical, social and food is also very useful. Favourite part of the book was the illustrated hand signals for numbers.
Good to carry around in China, but not sufficient for learning the language; a CD or teacher is needed.
