Good consise and chunky August 2, 2010 FridgeHair (Edinburgh, UK) Excellent book, covers everything I was wanting it for. Also loads of content and a good old fashioned heavy and thick manual.
A good book, but, still lacks really in depth info! July 24, 2010 B. S. Barwick (Huddersfield, UK) I, no doubt, like 1000's of others have been dabbling with Windows in all it's guises, since win3.1! During this period, a good amount of learning has taken place, making mistakes (some serious) but, learing from them.
When I upgraded to Windows 7 x 64, it was a totally new concept, so, I began looking for a suitable reference book, this one, publised by Microsoft, and written by 3 experts, seemed just what I needed, it was a little expensive in my opnion at £21, but, I went ahead and purchased it.
There are over 1000 pages in this book, I started to read, and to be honest, found it difficult to find a topic I knew litle about, I'm not being big headed, but, I'd say 90% of the book, you probably already know, or, have discovered by using 'Goggle' or other search engines.
Don't get me wrong, it could be a useful reference book, there are a few 'tricks' it reveals which are useful, but, I was expecting a much deeper probing into Windows 7. The book is probably written for the mass public, whom might have very little knowledge, great, but, I got the impression (wrongly?) before buying, it was written for users who already have a sound understanding of Windows, such as XP, Vista etc., etc.,
There is a 'free' CD with the book, but, there is not anything interesting on it really, except, an electronic version of the whole book.
I'm almost at the end of the book now, and I'm hoping the last chapter or so, will dive a bit deeper into Windows. If you need a reference book and your experience of fiddling around with settings (in Windows) is limited, then I would recommend this book, if you aklready have a good grasp of OS, maybe search out other quality publicatiosn.
It does look nice on the book shelve though!
Windows 7 illuminated June 29, 2010 J. Adams (Cambridge UK) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this book because I had the XP version before and a new laptop has Windows 7. The book meets my expectations. The logical arrangement of the chapters and excellent index make it easy to look up a subject. I find the advise in the 'Note' boxes invaluable. The book has paid for itself in time saved. I have loaded the CD version of the book onto my laptop but I find being able to put my thumb in the hard copy much more practical especialy when there is a dialog box on the screen.
Useful all in all June 27, 2010 totnes_nigel (Devon, UK) I think this is probably the third of these I've bought for various incarnations of Windows now and overall I've been satisfied.
Windows 7 is the most user friendly version of windows so far (wow I said that!) and a novice with simple needs might find this book a bit much. However it has certainly helped me to get into some of the new areas of the os in a fairly painless way. The new "search" would be an example of this. Equally the new explorer has quite a lot of useful features in it - not sure how quickly I would have found them without this book. There are a number of other similar examples I could give.
The book probably paid for itself in helping me to network non win7 machines (Microsoft assumes of course that you will only want to network win7 machine and the system help is - well - unhelpful). This book got me through it quickly and sensibly.
Any complaints - well it could actually be a bit more techy for me I guess - some of the stuff is aimed pretty low (tho I would not recommend this for a real beginner). Equally there is a "microsoft" orientation to the authoring only pointing out non ms programs as a last resort (but then the book is about win7). The fact that they trot out the ms justification for the firewall not bothering to check outgoing traffic seems a bit silly to me (they even manage to give reasons why you would not want an av program in the same chapter).
However for anyone moving to win7 from XP for example (such as me) the book is useful, easy to read/understand and helps you get the best from a good (!) operating system quickly.
Good for Sleep June 21, 2010 David Holden (Top of the Peak) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I think that this book has more IN than OUT. This heavy tome appears to cover all aspects of the Windows 7 operating system, although not quite for the extreme novice. However, for the up-grader, especially from an XP or earlier environment, then you will find this book extremely useful and easy to read.
Try reading this in bed at bedtime you will get the reason for the title.
