3 out of 5 stars poor second   March 3, 2010

not a patch on the first book, just starts to get interesting when it ends ready for the next.
this book is dryer & lacks the pace & direction of the first. It is interesting regarding the historical context but the story line struggles to keep your attention.

5 out of 5 stars Knowledge is the key   March 1, 2010

Absolutely loved this book, probably a bit 'in love' with this barbarian, Ballista. Have learnt more about history in these two books than in a mountain of others. Cannot wait for the next one. Very descriptive. Have loaned out my copies of first two several times and all the remarks have been really positive. Who wouldn't want a friend such as Maximus?.

5 out of 5 stars A ROMAN FEAST   January 17, 2010

When i picked up the first of Harry sidebottom's 'Ballista' series from a supermarket bookshelf for a derisory price I thought it might just be 'another predcitable action series' with the Roman empire as background. Fortunately, or unfortunately, I was glued to it until I finished it! Not only was it action, it taught you more about the Roman Empire than any other novel i have read on the subject. It knocked Conn Iggulden into the shade and effectively sideswiped Simon Scarrow, but then the author is an Oxbridge don with a supreme flair for fleshing out a splendid story. Volume three is due out sometime this year, I can't wait!

if you are interested in historical fiction, then it does not come in any better shape or form. the character building is very good.the actual detailing of scenery and warfare makes you feel you are watching a movie.only advice is read the first part 'fire in east' before reading this novel

2 out of 5 stars Not what I hoped for...   November 13, 2009

I read and enjoyed, the first of the series, 'Fire in the East', and eagerly awaited the sequel. I have to say though, I was left disappointed with this. It often lacked direction, had some seemingly pointless sections of plot, and had a consistent, irritating urge to use accurate Roman political/military/religious etc. terms, when it would have kept the pace better, and done the reader no disservice to use current variants (after all, this is light fiction, we're not studying Roman history here).

Overall, I had the impression that this book had been written primarily to achieve publisher/print deadlines and specification, rather than because he had a good story to tell. Ballista's coming-home sex scene with his wife was a particularly low moment. It was a bit like coming home to find your parents at it - it was just awkward given the overall tone of the book.

That negative stuff aside, I continue to like the main character, Ballista, and found the odd (rare) moment in this book that connected back to the first in feeling. I will try the next book, in the hope that more of the natural flow and quality of story from the first book resurfaces. If not, then I'll be very unlikely to go back for more.
