Very in depth, but perhaps a little technical July 28, 2010 Mr. M. E. Merritt (Portsmouth UK.) Let's start with a truth... I'm a luddite, I can type and I can view the internet, but for all I know it works by magic.
I do run a wordpress based website though so, in the interest of giving my much put upon friends a rest, I thought I'd try and teach myself using this book.
Sadly, I failed, partially through my own incompetence and partially as this is all just a touch technical (unlike the excellent 'idiot's guide' series.
Thankfully though, in the right hands, this worked a treat!
More techie than I thought... July 18, 2010 D. Thurgood (Liverpool Uk) I like this book. It's written in a very readable and approachable style. My only difficulty with it is that it assumes a greater knowledge of Wordpress than that which I actually have, so I'm struggling. Quite a bit really! However, for the right type of reader this book is possibly perfect. I think I'm just not that reader!
The author covers all aspects of a wordpress installation and then goes on to describe in some detail how to extend wordpress to make it work for you. If you're experienced with PHP, MySql and Wordpress and want to take it all further then I recommend this book to you. If you're like me however, a graphic come web designer without the above mentioned skills, then you may struggle.
An excellent guide to WordPress for improvers, not beginners... July 11, 2010 S. P. Moses (Epsom, United Kingdom) The aim of this book is to teach web developers and professionals who want to use the power of WordPress and spark the minds of those who want to create things beyond the obvious. This is not a book for beginners. You'll need to make sure you've mastered the blog, before you can go beyond.
Smashing WordPress tells you what you need to know to get started with WordPress. The book admits that the pace is quicker than traditional beginner books. It shows you how to change the skin of your site, explores the use of Plug-Ins and describes how WordPress can be used as a content management system and more. Finally there is a WordPress Toolbox, which is a selection of tricks and techniques which you can use to enhance your site.
I like the inventive and creative ethos of this book. It teaches you how to do things, but also seeks to inspire you to think for yourself. Smashing WordPress is attractively designed. Each chapter is colour coded and there's a helpful summary at the beginning of each which tells you what you are going to learn, but also what you need to know beforehand to make the most of it.
Smashing WordPress is aimed at the web developer, though it says that it is also suitable for anyone who has used XHTML, CSS, PHP, or WordPress. While I have dabbled with XHTML and CSS, I haven't dealt with PHP or WordPress yet. So, while this book isn't suitable for me right now, I'm going to keep it on my shelf for when I've learned what I need to know.
Great Book June 25, 2010 DL Productions UK (Merseyside, UK) It's not often you find a book which you can enjoy and learn from, and this, Smashing WordPress does the trick; a bit more advanced maybe, but this really suits me, as I am quite au-fee with web design and PHP.
This book goes further than the blog, and teaches you CMS techniques and is quite comprehensive - and understandable, something authors don't always convey well. This is great for developers of websites who want to, or are forced to use Wordpress as part of a project which requires the versatility of the platform, with a slightly different view on how to deal with the software, and the web server it uses.
I can see this book being useful in the future too, as well as the present. You can also carry some ideas from this to your own projects, as well as implement exciting Wordpress websites which will impress your clients and users alike.
Well worth a look.
Great little book June 24, 2010 Paul Robinson (Manchester, UK) I'm a full-time software developer specialising in web apps, and am conversant with PHP, MySQL and a frequent user (but until now, not a developer), of WordPress.
The Smashing Magazine blog is a fabulous resource for many web professionals, and I had very high hopes for this book. I wasn't let down. I can imagine beginners wanting to go off and explore a few things elsewhere first perhaps a little in places, but this is a comprehensive guide to Wordpress and being able to customise and extend it.
I teach web development at an undergraduate level, and whilst this isn't quite right as a course text for my course, it will certainly be in the "also-rans" for the students who want to explore WordPress specifically and get to grips with the World's most popular open-source blogging platform.
Oh, and one reviewer below suggests a problem with WordPress is that it's open source and therefore less secure: this is nonsense. His "own framework" has not had thousands of security experts pour over it trying to find vulnerabilities the way WordPress has. Open source is de facto more secure than closed source. Install with confidence, and upgrade often!
