Product Description It is Ireland in the early 1950s and for Eilis Lacey, as for so many young Irish girls, opportunities are scarce. So when her sister arranges for her to emigrate to New York, Eilis knows she must go, leaving behind her family and her home for the first time.

underwhelmed July 27, 2010 phoenix really thought this book lacked depth, the overall story was good, but it was told in a very emotionless way with no real insight into the main characters thoughts or feelings. you knew immediately that it was wriiten by a male author as i felt alot of it did not ring true for a female character. its a pity as it could have been amazing, the plot is good, would say it would make a great film. i couldnt help but think how amazingly an author like maeve binchy would have told the same story. cannot believe that it has been shortlisted for prizes.
that said, its a nice light easy read, so if thats what you're in the mood for i wouldnt rule it out. borrow it dont buy it though.
Brooklyn by Colm Toibin July 17, 2010 Mrs. A. Brockway (Worcestershire,England) I loved this book; superbly written. Eilis Lacey lives a life in Ireland in the 1950's without much chance of finding decent work. Her brothers are working in England and her elder sister Rose has a decent job.Eilis has only a Sunday job with a nasty boss Miss Kelly who is quite cruel to her. Her sister arranges for her to emmigrate to America, therefore she has to leave her widowed mother, but she does go as she fears that this maybe her only opportubity to improve her life. She arrives in America very homesick, she does eventually find friendships but then the story turns to the dilemams she has to face. The author Colm Toibin has a gift of description that you feel that you are actually there in a flim. There is almost no fuss about the feelings that are held. The story seemed so simple at first and I couldn't believe that any mystery or story was going to be told, but the more I read the more I wanted to read every word . I couldn't believe how lonely Eilis must have felt; The book is written in such fine detail but without a feeling of boredom with the description. Wonderful characters,I was disapointed when I had finished reading it and yet all the way through there was a mystery on how it was going to end.The story will haunt you. I am eager to read more of Colm Toibin
A bookclub selection July 10, 2010 Louise (London UK) Brooklyn is a well told story of Irish immigration to the United States. It is an uncomfortable and sad tale. The young heroine is very capable of thinking but does not share her thoughts with anyone and her emotional isolation leads her into distressing circumstances. How does this reflect the Irish experience?
Loved it July 10, 2010 BC I really enjoyed this book. My Irish parents told stories of their brothers and sisters who had been sent away to America and Australia so the story was very believeable, I only wish it had been longer.
brooklyn July 6, 2010 Hayley Warren (United Kingdom) We have used Brooklyn as a title for our book group. It has invoked some of the best discussion we have had for a long time. We had so many different points of view, but all agreed it is a great read!
