5 out of 5 stars best book in a long while   July 16, 2010
J. A. West (Surrey, UK)
Enthralling from beginning to end. Made me laugh and cry (not many books manage that!). Well written and totally engaging. The lives of the staff of a mission hospital in Ethiopia unfold and entrance - other reviews give plot synopsis.

Slight niggle towards the end - would main character really have waited so long before contacting Ethiopian community?? But this is only a small flaw in an otherwise excellent read.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Read   July 13, 2010

I loved this book. I'm not an intellectual yet I wasn't put off by the medical details in fact I think I learned a thing or two. Its a lovely story which includes every aspect of life - births, deaths, love, betrayal, loyalty, war, beliefs. I became totally absorbed by Marions story. I loved all the characters and I even cried towards the end. Fantastic, the best book I've read in ages!

Eminently readable and almost very good. More than a run of the mill story but fails to maintain avid interest throuhgout. Some of the medical events are far fetched and could embarrass readers with more than a passing interest in the surgical arts. I enjoyed reading this mini saga but my enjoyment was not maintained at the pitch it reached in the first few chapters.

5 out of 5 stars Thouroughly enjoyable and realistic read   June 20, 2010

This is the best book I've read in ages. I am probably slightly biased as I work as a surgeon so the medical themes were very appealing to me and also very realistic. But the quality of the writing and story telling is superb. The author instills an empathy with all the characters no matter how flawed they may be so that the novel becomes a real page turner. It's amazing that the author competently deals with so many siffernet themes within such a short novel: religion, gender politics, terrorism, medical education, sex (lots of it), autism, birth, death etc etc. An awesome book that the author can be truly proud of.
